Blumhouse Productions has secured the film and TV rights to Something is Killing the Children from BOOM! Studios. The production company will develop a live-action feature film and an adult animated TV series.

The comic by co-creators James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera is set in a world where children can see monsters and adults cannot. The lead character is Erica Slaughter, a monster hunter on a quest to kill the predators, though the organization she works for cares more about keeping them a secret than saving their prey.

The comic began publication in 2019, winning multiple Eisner awards, including three consecutive Best Writer awards for Tynion. BOOM! has committed to giving it a 100-issue run, and at New York Comic Con they announced the new event series, Fall of the House of Slaughter, that leads up to issue 50 in 2026.

Blumhouse is a production company that specializes in horror. It is home to the Insidious and Purge franchises, The Black Phone, M3gan, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, among other hit horror films.

“It’s easy to see why audiences and critics alike have praised Something is Killing the Children,” Blumhouse CEO and founder Jason Blum said. “James and Werther’s comic book series taps into our most primal fears, luring us into a fascinating world and introducing Erica Slaughter, the ass-kicking hero we all wish we had to fight the monsters that lurk in the dark.”

The film will be produced by Stephen Christy and Tynion for BOOM!, Blum will produce for Blumhouse with Shaun Sutton and Ryan Turek as executive producers. Adam Yoelin and Mette Norkjaer are also executive producers, and Dell’Edera will co-produce.

The animated show will be adapted and executive produced by Tynion, and Dell’Edera will serve as co-executive producer and visual development consultant. Christy will executive produce the series for BOOM! with Yoelin and Norkajer co-executive producing.

Something is Killing the Children is the comic book that changed my life and career forever,” Tynion said. “Finding a partner who understood the potential of Erica Slaughter and the world Werther Dell’Edera and I have built was crucial, and we have found that partner in Jason Blum. Nobody understands horror better than Blumhouse, and I can’t wait for the world to see what we all have planned together.”

“Developing Something Is Killing the Children with Blumhouse is a milestone for BOOM! Studios,” Christy said. “In this deal, Jason Blum has shown a real commitment to putting James and Werther’s vision first, which means everything to us. We’ve been on this journey with them since the very first issue, and to now partner with Blumhouse to bring their world to film and television feels like the culmination of years of belief in this story.”
