Thundarr, the sword and sorcery hero who starred in his own animated series in the early 1980s is making the leap to comics for the first time. The Thundarr the Barbarian animated series is set nearly 2,000 years in the future in a post-apocalyptic time filled with barbarians, wizards, and monsters. The comic of the same name is being published by Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products.

Thundarr the Barbarian will be written by Jason Aaron (Wolverine) and features art by Kewber Baal (Vampirella). Thundarr, Princess Ariel, and Ookla the Mok are trying to save the world’s last humans from being enslaved by mutants and wizards. Their task becomes far more difficult when Thundarr’s enemies Gemini and Mindok the Mind Menace join forces, and the heroes must fight to save the future. The comic even travels back to 1994 on the day that a runaway planet headed to Earth and the Moon, beginning the cosmic destruction.

“This strange new world arisen from the old, a world of savagery, super-science and sorcery, as created by so many comic book legends, imprinted on me in a profound way at an early age,” Aaron said. “Thundarr the Barbarian isn’t simply my all-time favorite Saturday morning cartoon. It’s a fundamental component of my DNA as a writer. To say I’m thrilled to be crafting Thundarr’s first ever comic book adventure would be a gross understatement. In a career full of dream jobs, this one will most assuredly go down as one of the dreamiest. And as a lifelong fan of this character and his richly imagined world, I’m intent on creating a story that honors the cartoon we all know and love, while propelling Thundarr into his most epic adventure yet.”

The comic will feature covers by Rob Liefeld, Dan Panosian, Francesco Mattina, Michael Cho, Joseph Michael Linsner, Björn Barends, and others.
