The Art of Manga Exhibit at the de Young Museum
The de Young Museum in San Francisco is hosting The Art of Manga exhibit showcasing the artwork from Japanese comics and graphic novels. Rarely exhibited manga art from the 1970s to today is currently on display until January 25, 2026.
Artists showcased in the exhibit include Chiba Tetsuya, Akatsuka Fujio, Takahashi Rumiko, Taniguchi Jiro, Yamazaki Mari, Araki Hirohiko, Yamashita Kazumi, Tagame Gengoroh, Yoshinaga Fumi, Oda Eiichiro, and Tanaami Keiichi.
“The exhibition explores manga as a powerful medium for visual storytelling, highlighting themes across genres, from friendship to sexuality to the human condition. Looking closely at each artist’s narrative worlds and creative processes, the exhibition also spotlights manga’s cultural impact today and possibilities for the future,” per the exhibit description.
The exhibit includes an area focused on the popular One Piece manga that follows Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates on their adventures. The installation will show steps in the creative process that starts with creator Oda Eiichiro through its evolution to the printing press. This will be done through a set of “treasure boxes” and films.
A group of Gashapon toy vending machines by Bandai Namco will be located outside of the exhibition hall. They will be filled with toys based on popular anime and other small collectibles that attendees can purchase via tokens.
The de Young Museum is located at 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive in San Francisco, CA. More details can be found on the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco website.
