ComicConnect’s Event Auction 63 Closes with Record Sales
ComicConnect’s Event Auction 63 has wrapped up with more record sales. Dave Cockrum’s classic cover for X-Men #150 blasted its way to $356,628. That marks the third highest sale ever for Cockrum art, and the highest price ever paid for his second run on the X-Men title. The art was previously purchased by comic collector Scott Hopses for $400 in 1983.
In addition to being a striking original work, the cover for X-Men #150 sums up the impact of what would become one of the most important issues in the title’s history – capturing the moment when Magneto would begin to regain his humanity. “I’ve literally had this art over my desk for over 35 years,” Hospes said. “It’s kind of bittersweet to see it go, but I’m sure that whoever has bought this appreciates it as much as I do.”
Event Auction 63 also boasted top sales in vintage comics, with More Fun Comics #73 9.4 setting a new sales record for the title at $460,128. That winning bid more than tripled the classic comic’s previous high sale. Mystery Men Comics #6 9.6 set a new record of $32,775, while several scarce copies of Strange Adventures and Champ Comics also brought in new highs.
Batman’s first appearance in Detective Comics #27 also hit a new Restored sales record of $520,950 as part of the debut of the True North Collection. True North’s other rare restorations featured a Captain America Comics #1 9.4 at $133,528, while the battle of Batman #1 and Superman #1 (both restored at 9.4) was a draw with each at $121,900. All-Star Comics #8 9.6 also set a new record for the book’s restored copies at $35,651.
ComicConnect is continuing to take consignments from top collectors. Clients who put consignments toward payments are offered what ComicConnect describes as “competitive” commission rates and interest free cash advances. ComicConnect is seeking consignments for the Fall Mega Monthly Auction and Event Auction 64.
