Artist Hisao Tamaki illustrated the manga adaptation of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1998, presenting George Lucas’ classic science fiction film in the popular Japanese art style. Dark Horse Comics and Lucasfilm have collaborated to give readers a new look at the art he produced for the book in The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope – The Manga by Hisao Tamaki. The art book is seeking backers on Kickstarter.

The book is filled with Tamaki’s never before seen art boards. It has high quality reproductions of original art pages showcasing the blue pencil marks, pasted captions, and editorial notes. The book is formatted in the right to left reading order found in Japanese manga publications.

The Art of Star Wars: A New Hope – The Manga by Hisao Tamaki will be available in retail and Kickstarter exclusive editions. The Kickstarter release has variant covers, deluxe packaging, oversized formats, signed editions, and other collector incentives that aren’t available in the retail versions.

The reward levels began with a digital copy of the book for $35, then the two-volume set with Kickstarter exclusive covers and the digital PDF edition is $85. Pledge levels continue with a collector’s slipcase, art print set, a masterpiece edition, triptych folio set, books signed by Tamaki, and more.

The Kickstarter campaign has already reached its goal of $50,000, and will be accepting backers until October 17, 2025.
