Lay Odds on a Longshot
Longshot is a superhero created by Ann Nocenti and Art Adams who has a “good luck” power when he is acting with pure motives. He started out as an amnesiac fugitive from another dimension who became affiliated with the X-Men. His first appearance was 40 years ago in Longshot #1 (September 1985), the first of a six-issue self-titled miniseries.
Longshot is an artificial humanoid from the Mojoworld dimension. He was created by genetic engineers to be a slave for Mojoworld masters, known as Spineless Ones. Arize, the head engineer, gave Longshot and other slaves free will so that one day they could fight for their freedom. Bolstered by their desire for emancipation, Longshot and other slaves underwent a mystical ritual that would give them the ability to create good luck.

Unfortunately, the masters had more formidable weapons and power that bested the slaves’ luck, and they quashed the rebellion. During the fighting, Longshot suffered an attack that made him amnesiac, but he was still able to escape Mojoworld and find Earth.
Once on our planet, he became an adventurer and gained his name after routinely displaying good luck against poor odds. He became a movie stuntman after befriending stuntwoman Ricochet Rita, and adopted fellow Mojoworld refugee Magog as his “Pup.” His happy life was disrupted when Mojo (the leader of Mojoworld) and his assistant, Spiral, finally found Longshot on Earth. Longshot, Richochet Rita, Doctor Strange, and Quark defeated Mojo and Spiral, then Doctor Strange sent them back to their world. Realizing that he should help the other slaves, Longshot returned to his home to free them.
Longshot’s luck wasn’t with him, the rebellion failed, and Mojo sent him back to Earth – once again with amnesia. He joined the X-Men fighting the likes of Juggernaut and the Marauders, then was temporarily dead from a fight with the Adversary. As a part of the X-Men, he fought the Brood and the Reavers, helped rescue teammates from Genosha, and was in a romantic relationship with Dazzler.
