Well known Judge Frank Caprio died on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, following a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 88 years old.
Caprio was beloved for his compassion and warmth that he displayed in the court room and on court-set videos that went viral.
“Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond. His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him,” per a statement on his Facebook page.
He was born on November 23, 1936, in Providence, Rhode Island. Caprio was an American government teacher at Hope High School in Providence, and attended law school at night. From 1985 to 2023, he served as a municipal court judge in Providence.
Caprio had his own TV show, Caught in Providence, in which he gained a reputation as the “nicest judge in the world” for being kind to people in his court. The show originally aired in 2000, then returned in 2015, and soon went viral for Caprio’s forgiving attitude toward defendants.
