Archie and the Riverdale gang are ready for their closeup! Universal Pictures is developing a live-action movie starring Archie Comics characters. Comic writer Tom King (Batman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) is writing the script.

“Archie is about how we find the meaning of life in our love and the meaning of love in our life,” King said. “And also about how incredibly hungry Jughead is. Like so hungry.”

Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Aditya Sood (who produced Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) are producing through Lord Miller Productions. Archie Comics CEO and Publisher Jon Goldwater and Emma Watts (who brought the project to Lord Miller) are also producing.

“We are longtime fans of Archie, Veronica, Betty, and the gang in all of their iterations. When we heard Tom King’s take on the classic material, we instantly thought it made sense as an event movie for all audiences – both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. We’re so excited to bring these beloved characters to the big screen,” Lord and Miller said.

Archie has seen success in live-action multiple times in a variety of genres. The Riverdale series was a dramatic teen soap opera, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was a horror-tinged series, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a popular ‘90s sitcom.

The filmmakers and Archie Comics have not disclosed details about the genre, plot, or expected release date.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be working with the dream team of Phil, Chris, Emma, and Tom,” Goldwater said. “These are the perfect visionaries to bring our wonderful Archie characters to life on the big screen. This is an event that’s been 85 years in the making, and I can’t wait for everyone to see what is about to come.”
