Sophie and Violet have been best friends since they were kids and over the years that bond has made them feel more like sisters. The room together at college where Sophie is taking her studies seriously and Violet wants to join a popular sorority. Then tragedy strikes when Violet drowns during a hazing activity, and Sophie is convinced that the sorority is at fault. She goes to see a psychic medium with a powerful connection to the other side and now Violet is back – sort of.

The second issue opens with a flashback to a confrontation between Violet and her older sister, Amber. In the present, Violet begs Sophie to pledge the sorority so that they can expose them, particularly the appropriately named president Karma, for her wrongful death.

Sisterhood A Hyde Street Story is off to a great start. Writer Maytal Zchut has efficiently set up the story and established the characters personalities without wasting a page. The revenge premise has a supernatural twist, and there are moments that allude to something more sinister behind Violet’s return.

Violet is trapped in another plane of existence where she appears to Sophie on glass surfaces. Using this limitation, artist Leila Leiz and colorist Alex Sinclair cleverly illustrate Violet as this ethereal being who floats in a mirror or provides subtext by glaring through someone else’s glasses. They also break panel structure with artwork that overlaps into another panel, driving home the significance of what is being shown.
