The 1989 Batman movie and its sequel Batman Returns will swing back to theaters for a special one-night screening. It will be held on August 25, 2025, exclusively at 160 AMC Theatres around the US. The remastered versions of the film will be presented in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for the first time ever.

Directed by Tim Burton, the two films starred Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, who gave an intense, brooding performance as the hero. The all-star casts were rounded out by Jack Nicholson as the Joker, Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale, Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, Danny DeVito as Penguin, and Christopher Walken as Max Shreck.

Batman had been off the big screen for over 20 years when 1989’s Batman premiered. Warner Bros. took a gamble on the film because superhero movies weren’t that successful in the ‘80s and most action movies were dominated by heavily muscled heroes that played cops, soldiers, and martial arts masters. Burton created a Dark Knight that was more serious than the campy ’60s version, though not lacking in humor. It had the rough ’80s New York streets vibe while playing up the makeup and costumes that populate the comic book source material. His unique style, the noir aesthetic, great cast, and soundtrack by Danny Elman combined to make Batman and Batman Returns major hits.

“I hadn’t watched these films since I made them, and seeing them again with this level of clarity, beauty, color, and sound felt really new and exciting. Dolby Atmos and Vision brought it all to life in a fresh way,” Burton said.

“Tim Burton’s acclaimed Batman films deliver a dark, iconic vision of Gotham City that continues to influence the modern super hero genre today. With their advancements over the past decades, Dolby now transforms these beloved classics into completely new cinematic experiences through Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, delivering unprecedented visual and audio fidelity,” Warner Bros. Pictures President of Global Distribution Jeff Goldstein said.
