George Lucas to Participate in First Ever SDCC Panel
Every year San Diego Comic-Con attracts big stars from comics, film, and television. They participate in panels that reveal big news on upcoming projects and do deep dives into the entertainment industry. Some stars have become familiar faces at the comics and pop culture mecha, but one has been elusive – until now. Star Wars creator George Lucas is finally heading to San Diego Comic-Con for his first ever panel.
He will join writer-director Guillermo del Toro and Star Wars prequel production designer Doug Chiang with actress-rapper-singer Queen Latifah moderating the panel. They will discuss the significance of illustrated storytelling and provide details on the new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The panel will be held in the Comic-Con’s famed Hall H on Sunday from 11 AM to 12 PM.
“We are beyond thrilled to welcome George Lucas to Comic-Con for the very first time,” Comic-Con Chief Communications & Strategy Officer David Glanzer said.
Star Wars has been a part of San Diego Comic-Con since 1976 when A New Hope was promoted at the convention months before debuting in theaters. They hosted the first panel with Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin, the creators behind the inaugural Star Wars comic series. The special comic style movie poster created by Chaykin (now one of the most valuable Star Wars posters) was given out as a promotional item.
“Now, to have Mr. Lucas return, this time to debut the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, is a true full-circle moment,” Glanzer continued. “His lifelong dedication to visual storytelling and world-building resonates deeply with us and our community, and the museum’s mission to celebrate narrative art in all its forms perfectly reflects what Comic-Con has championed from the very beginning.”
Co-founded by Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the Lucas Museum will be located in LA’s Exposition Park and is set to open in 2025. It will focus on storytelling through artwork, and its impact on history, culture, and media.
The museum’s collection will display works by comic creators like Jack Kirby, Frank Frazetta, Winsor McCay, Alison Bechdel, Chris Ware, and R. Crumb. Art by Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, Maxfield Parrish, Jessie Willcox Smith, and Beatrix Potter, and photographs by Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks, and Henri Cartier-Bresson will be displayed.
The museum will also feature material from the Lucas Archive, including models, props, concept art, and costumes.
