
Judge Dredd, Namor, Star Wars Original Art Featured in Hake’s Auction
Hake’s Auction #244 is in full swing with over 1,500 lots of memorabilia, including a robust original art section. Comic covers and interior pages are joined by comic strips, paintings, concept art and more, including multiple Star Wars pieces and striking covers of Judge Dredd and Namor the Sub-Mariner.
Judge Dredd – 2000 AD Prog 197 cover by Brian Bolland from 1981 features the tough law enforcer being blown from his Lawmaster motorcycle as an atomic bomb explodes in the background, destroying multiple Mega-City One buildings. The art has been signed by Bolland in red felt tip pen. This cover was made for the issue that featured the first part of the “Pirates of the Black Atlantic” story.
The Sub-Mariner #11 cover by Gene Colan with inks attributed to Dan Adkins and Marie Severin depicts Namor racing across the ocean surface toward a submarine’s periscope. The top margin has large title written in pencil and bottom margin has extensive handwritten notes regarding coloring for the cover.
The Star Wars Weekly #8 cover by Gil Kane was featured on Marvel UK’s adaptation of the American Star Wars comics, which were typically split into smaller segments and published over a number of issues. The UK adaptation of the movie stretched into 12 issues and featured eight covers exclusive to the UK market. This cover captures the lightsaber battle between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2 witness the fight.
Hake’s is offering three Star Wars pages by Howard Chaykin from the comic adaptation of the movie. Issue 2 page 26 features six panels of Stormtroopers pursuing Chewbacca, Han Solo, R2-D2, C-3PO, Luke Skywalker, and Obi-Wan Kenobi as they discuss the condition of the Millennium Falcon, which is prominently shown in the top panel. Issue 4 page 30 has five panels of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, C-3PO, and R2-D2 about to escape the Death Star as Stormtroopers chase after them. Issue 5 page 10 shows five panels of the unshielded Millennium Falcon attempting to escape from Imperial TIE Fighters with closeups of Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and Luke Skywalker.
The original art highlights continue with Detective Comics #522 cover by Jim Aparo of Batman fighting the Sinister Snowman, Fantastic Four #42 page by Jack Kirby of the team fighting the Frightful Four, Thor #142 page by Jack Kirby of the hero battling the Super-Skrull, and Secrets of the Legion of Super-Heroes #3 cover by Dick Giordano featuring Superboy and the team fleeing a futuristic city.
More highlights are Superman Vol. 2 #65 cover by Dan Jurgens with the Man of Steel surrounded by Batman, Green Lantern, Shazam, and other heroes, Superman: Secret Origin #2 variant cover by Gary Frank of Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes arriving in a futuristic Smallville, and Journey Into Mystery #63 page by Jack Kirby with a large splash of the aquatic behemoth Goliath.
