Ayo & Aneka: Forming the Midnight Angels
The Dora Milaje is an elite group of warrior women recruited from the many tribes of Wakanda to protect the royal family. Captain Aneka was a leader in the fighting force and Ayo was a loyal member of their ranks.
When Ayo first joined the Dora Milaje she was defiant toward Aneka and fellow leader, Mistress Zola. Seeing the rebellious young fighter as a challenge, Ayo kept doggedly training her. Then after months of sparing Ayo and Aneka became romantically involved.
A frightened woman named Lesedi sought their help because the chieftain of her village was assaulting the women there. Aneka was sent to investigate, and when she learned of his depravity she killed him, and was then imprisoned for what she had done. Ayo pleaded with Ramonda for Aneka’s life, but the Queen-Mother sentenced her to death. Refusing to watch her lover die, Ayo stole the Midnight Angel armor prototypes and broke Aneka out of prision.
Once they were safely away, Ayo and Aneka formed the Midnight Angels to protect the Wakandan people that were overlooked by the royal family. The Midnight Angels helped women who were being oppressed by the White Gorilla Army, killing their leader and helping to turn the Jabari-lands into a fairer society. T’Challa tried to stop them, but the empathically-powered Kenzi stopped him.
Later, Queen Shuri met with Ayo and Aneka to find a way to make peace with T’Challa. They agreed to have the Midnight Angels help defend the Golden City from the People, a rebel force of extremists. Once the threat was neutralized, T’Challa formed a more democratic system of government, due in part to the efforts of Ayo, Aneka, and the Midnight Angels.
