Considered to be the first publication devoted entirely to comics and cartoons, it includes the first installment of the cliffhanger feature “History of a Coat” by William Heath. Innovations include use of word balloons and of the phrase “to be continued.”
125 years ago June 9, 1900 French writer Victor Dancette is born.
115 years ago June 8, 1910 Writer-artist C.C. Beck is born. He’s known for his art featuring Fawcett’s Captain Marvel, for his creation of Fatman, and for his many interactions with comics fans.
110 years ago June 7, 1915 Artist Graham J. Ingels is born. He’s best known for his evocative horror art for the EC line.
110 years ago June 8, 1915 Woody Gelman is born. The writer-artist is publisher of Nostalgia Press and editor and art director of Topps. He co-creates Bazooka Joe, Mars Attacks, and Popsicle Pete and creates and writes DC’s Dunbar Dodo and Fennimore Frog.
105 years ago June 7, 1920 Artist Pete Tumlinson is born. He’s especially known for his work on Kid Colt.
105 years ago June 9, 1920 Italian artist Sandro Angiolini is born.
105 years ago June 12, 1920 Cartoonist Dave Berg is born. He’s especially known for his satiric features for MAD.

90 years ago June 10, 1935 Award-winning writer-artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi is born. Credited with starting the gekiga (“dramatic pictures”) style of Japanese alternative comics, he’s the subject of the 2011 film Tatsumi. He’s also known for his autobiography, A Drifting Life.
85 years ago June 6, 1940 The first issue of the Bulgarian comic book Chuden Sviat is published.
80 years ago June 9, 1945 Brazilian novelist and artist Minami Keizi is born. He is co-founder of the publishing house EDREL (Editora de Revistas e Livros) and M&C Editores.
75 years ago June 7, 1950 Artist W.O. Wilson dies at age 83. He created Madge the Magician’s Daughter.
75 years ago June 11, 1950 Artist, musician, and animator Pedro Bell is born. He often refers to his drawings as “scartoons.”

20 years ago June 10, 2005 Manga artist Shinji Nagashima dies of heart failure at age 67. Known as the father of shonen manga, he also published The Harsh Story of a Manga Artist.
