The Punisher is an antihero with no sympathy for the villains he faces. A tough guy with a rough demeanor, the Punisher has tortured and killed many criminal, and as a result, he has attracted some truly nasty bad guys. Guys like Jigsaw.

Created by Len Wein and Ross Andru, Jigsaw made his first full appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #162 (November 1976). He was introduced as Billy Russo, a man who had been kicked out by his abusive father when he was just 10 years old. Billy grew up on the streets and became a hitman for New York crime families. He was nicknamed Billy the Beaut for his handsome looks and continued the cycle of violence by abusing his wife and son.

After Frank Castle’s family was killed in a botched execution attempt, crime boss Frank Costa hired Billy the Beaut to cover their tracks by killing more of their loved ones. Most of the hits were carried out, but when he tried to kill Frank Castle with a bomb, he failed. Later that same day, the Punisher found Billy at a nightclub and killed all of Russo’s henchmen to get to him. In a mark of brutality, Punisher sent Billy the Beaut through a pane of glass, shredding his face.

Now with a visage covered in puzzle-like scars, Billy Russo became Jigsaw. Wanting revenge, Jigsaw tried to frame the Punisher for murder, but he was stopped by Spider-Man and Nightcrawler. His next revenge attempt was to drug the Punisher, causing Frank to become erratic and attack people indeterminately. When they were both in prison, Jigsaw tried to kill Punisher and failed, then the Punisher stopped Jigsaw when he attempted to break out.

Eventually the Rev got Jigsaw out of jail and hired him to oversee the importing of a new Venezuelan drug that he wanted to introduce in New York. Punisher found out about the plan and destroyed the drug shipment, so Jigsaw sent a gang after him while he and Rev escaped. Frank tracked them to Venezuela where Rev used his powers to heal Billy’s ruined face. Of course, Punisher destroyed his healed face again and left him for dead in the jungle. Fueled by rage, Jigsaw recovered and was arrested while trying to reenter the US. He was sent back to Ryker’s Island where he continued his commitment to killing Frank Castle.
