Mike Mignola Documentary on Kickstarter
Mike Mignola’s Hellboy has appeared in many comics, novels, games, live-action and animated films. Now the creator himself takes the spotlight for the new documentary Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters. The film is currently seeking backers on Kickstarter with a month-long campaign running through March 2021.
The feature length film gives an in-depth look at Mignola’s comics journey and impact from the beginning of his career working as an inker for Marvel to the success of Hellboy. It has never before seen interviews with Mignola at his studio, drawing demonstrations, and behind the scenes footage from comic conventions.
Several others from the comics and entertainment industry are interviewed for the documentary. Neil Gaiman talks about Mignola’s characters and the production of Hellboy II and Rebecca Sugar discusses how his work influenced her creation of Steven Universe. Dark Horse Publisher and founder Mike Richardson, Dark Horse Editor Katii O’Brien, Marvel EVP of Creative Development Joe Quesada, comic book writers Vita Ayala (The Wilds), Chris Roberson (Hellboy & The B.P.R.D.), and Thomas Sniegoski (Young Hellboy), and cartoonist Fábio Moon (Daytripper) are also interviewed.
Mythbusters host Adam Savage, Hellboy stars Doug Jones and Vanessa Eichhotlz, and novelists Christopher Golden (of the bestselling Ben Walker novels) and Victor LaValle (The Ballad of Black Tom) appear in the documentary. There are also interviews and art demonstrations with painter Jason Shawn Alexander, Duncan Fegredo (Hellboy: The Wild Hunt), Michael Avon Oeming (B.P.R.D.: The Soul Of Venice), colorist Dave Stewart, and Mignola himself.
Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters is co-directed and produced by Jim Demonakos (founder, LightBox Expo and ECCC) and Kevin Hanna (Clockwork Girl).
“There’s already 80 hours of footage in the can that we have shot over the last year and a half,” Hanna said. “This is an ambitious in-depth documentary to celebrate Mignola’s legacy in style.”
“We’re bringing the project to Kickstarter to secure the financing to shoot additional interviews, edit the film and score, and bring the film to market,” Demonakos said. “We want existing fans and curious readers alike to experience Mignola’s art and his incredible world of monsters and misfits.”
The Kickstarter campaign tiers include digital or Blu-ray copies of the documentary, a t-shirt, Hellboy prints by several artists, original art, commission from Mignola, up to being credited as an executive producer.
Filming is set to be completed by the fall/winter of 2021 with the finished product premiering in the spring of 2022.
