Heritage Sports Auction Breaks Record at $33.5M
The competition was high for Heritage’s three-day Spring Sports Catalog Auction, bringing in a massive total of over $33.5 million, setting a new record high for the auction house. That auction, held on May 6-8, 2021, beat the record of $32.7 million set by their March Platinum Night Sports Auction just two months prior.
“I am extremely proud of the hard work the team of experts at Heritage Sports put in to this record-breaking auction,” Chris Ivy, Director of Heritage Sports, said. “And I am extremely thankful for the thousands of consignors and bidders who continue to entrust us to handle the sale of these precious sports collectibles. The future looks very bright for this hobby as it continues to attract new collectors from around the globe.”
One of the top sellers was Michael Jordan’s game-worn University of North Carolina jersey from his 1982-1983 NCAA Player of the Year season that hammered for $1.38 million. That crushed the previous record of $480,000 for a Jordan Chicago Bulls 1986-1987 jersey that sold in October 2020.
“Over the last several years Heritage has set dozens of world records in the red-hot Michael Jordan collectibles market, and now we’re extremely proud to have shattered the records for a Jordan game-worn jersey,” Ivy said. “As the final price tag proves, this jersey has everything any serious collector could possibly want.”
Two cards surpassed the $1 million mark. A 1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal Honus Wagner PSA Fair 1.5 hammered for $2.28 million, setting a new record for a card graded under PSA VG 3. A 2000 Playoff Contenders Tom Brady Championship Ticket rookie card BGS 8.5, autograph 10 achieved $1.59 million.
One card that sold for just under $1 million was a Jackie Robinson 1952 Topps card PSA Mint 9 that cleared $960,000.
Two 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle rookie cards were in the auction, with the SGC 9 selling for $690,000 and the PSA 8 going for $528,000. A signed 1952 Topps Mantle PSA Authentic realized $216,000 and a 1954 Bowman Mantle SGC Mint 9 went for $126,000.
Ty Cobb sales included a 1910-1911 M116 Sporting Life PSA Mint 9, one of two known to exist, sold for $264,000 and an autographed 1909-1911 T206 Polar Bear PSA/DNA Authentic for $96,000.
The only 1948 Leaf Warren Spahn card PSA 10 hit a new record by achieving $252,000 and a 1958 Alifabolaget Pelé card PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 hammered for $372,000.
