Chadwick Boseman Wins Posthumous Emmy for Voice Work in What If…?
Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman won a posthumous Emmy Award for voicing T’Challa in Marvel’s animated What If…? series. The award for outstanding character voiceover performance was announced during the Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday and Sunday, September 3-4, 2022.
Boseman died in August 2020 of colon cancer, but before his passing, he played T’Challa, the popular MCU hero one last time. In his episode of What If…? Boseman voiced T’Challa in an alternate universe where he traveled the galaxy as Star-Lord instead of becoming Black Panther and King of Wakanda.
His wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, was at the ceremony to accept the Emmy on Boseman’s behalf. “Chad would be so honored, and I’m honored on his behalf,” she said during the acceptance speech.
After the win, Boseman’s official Twitter account posted, “He put every part of himself into every role he ever took on. It was a true honor for Chad to receive a posthumous Creative Arts #Emmys Award for his voice work in @Marvel Studios’ @whatifofficial. #BlackPanther”
Boseman beat fellow What If…? voice actor Jeffrey Wright and other Marvel nominee F. Murray Abraham (Moon Knight). Other voice acting nominees included Julie Andrews (Bridgerton), Maya Rudolph (Big Mouth), Stanley Tucci (Central Park), and the late Jessica Walter (Archer).
