Amazon Cancels Paper Girls Series
The search for a way back to 1989 has ended early. Amazon Prime Video has cancelled Paper Girls after one season – and on a cliffhanger.
Based on the graphic novel by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, Paper Girls is part sci-fi adventure, part coming of age story. The show began in 1989 when the four preteen girls start their early morning paper route only to be pulled through a time portal to 2019. On a quest to get back to their time, they meet older versions of themselves and are caught in a conflict between warring parties in the future. The series starred Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, Sofia Rosinsky, and Fina Strazza.
The eight-episode first season premiered in July 2022 to critical and audience praise. Despite that, it did not land well on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings against heavy competition like Stranger Things, The Boys, and Locke & Key.
According to Deadline, Legendary Television is shopping the series around in search of a new home. The first season ended on a cliffhanger, which could help attract another streaming service.
