Star Wars News Announced at D23 Expo
The Force was strong at Disney’s D23 Expo on September 9-11, 2022, when Lucasfilm premiered trailers and gave updates on upcoming series.
The cast of Andor and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy took the stage to debut the new trailer. It sets up where Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) is in the years leading up to Rogue One and teases a plotline involving Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) living the double life of Imperial Senate member and leader of the Rebel Alliance. Forest Whitaker is returning as Saw Gerrera, and the cast includes Stellan Skarsgård, Alex Ferns, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, and Denise Gough. Andor will get a three-episode premiere on Disney+ on September 21.
The official trailer for Tales of the Jedi was released, teasing the six short animated films. Three will focus on Jedi Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) showing how she joined the Jedi order and her training under Jedi Master Anakin Skywalker (Matt Lanter). The other three follow Count Dooku before he turned to the Dark Side, which includes young Qui-Gon Jinn and Jedi Mace Windu. Tales of the Jedi will start streaming on October 26.
The Bad Batch, the animated sequel to The Clone Wars, will return with a 16-episode second season. It picks up on the adventures of Clone Force 99, the experimental group of Clone Troopers who went rogue when the Empire was created. The Bad Batch features the voice talents of Dee Bradley Baker, Michelle Ang, Ming-Na Wen, Noshir Dalal, and Rhea Perlman. It will debut the first two episodes on Disney+ on January 4, 2023.
The first footage from the third season of The Mandalorian debuted at the event with the first footage of the planet Mandalore. Mando (Pedro Pascal), who was stripped of his status as a Mandalorian by the Armorer (Emily Swallow), is on a mission of atonement. The trailer also shows Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) who is conflicting with Mando about the future of Mandalore. The adorable Grogu, Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), and Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris) also appear in the trailer. The Mandalorian returns sometime in 2023.
Some of the other news included images from Ahsoka of the heroine ready for battle and Sabine Wren looking at the mural of the Ghost crew. An update on Skeleton Crew was also given, which will tell a new story set in the era of the New Republic about children lost in the galaxy.
