Cartoon-Celebrity Crossovers
Take one highly successful tv/film/book property and add a guest star from
another hugely followed property and you’ve got a recipe for even great success.
At least, this is what creators hope when they institute the crossover device.
More often than not, the crossover comes of somewhat flagging ratings or sales
and marketers’ hopes to boost and/or revive a property’s popularity.
That
said, who can forget when Bewitched’s Samantha and Darrin showed up on
The Flintstones? Or The Harlem Globetrotters popping up on Gilligan’s
Island? Whether good ideas or bad, crossovers often make for some of those
memorably campy (or clever) moments in pop culture history.
This week, we
thought we’d examine the wide reach of the crossover in the cartoon world. From
Hanna-Barbera’s most popular animated series to Steven Spielberg’s
Animaniacs, real life figures–whether from live action television or
cinema, or from the arenas of sports and politics–have consistently cropped up
in our cartoons.
But instead of listing all the instances we can think
of, we want to extend the question to you. Email us all the famous
figures you recall crossing over into the animated world and we’ll post what we
hope will be a massive, comprehensive list of your memories and recollections
next week.
