Hake’s Political Offerings Finish Strong
The first part of Hake’s Americana & Collectibles auction ended during the wee hours of Wednesday morning, September 26, 2007. Political collectibles led the way, soliciting many impressive prices. Among the standout items were a first seen dexterity puzzle from 1904 that featured images of both George Washington and Theodore Roosevelt which realized nearly $9,500 in bids, the classic 1924 Davis/Bryan jugate by Bastian fetched $4,025, a 1789 Washington inaugural clothing button with "Long Live The President" slogan along with his initials brought $3,542, an 1898 era photo album with the front cover depicting Theodore Roosevelt in his Rough Rider uniform garnered $3,304 in bids, and a Fremont/Cochrane 1862 ferrotype encased in a postage stamp-style frame realized $2,525.
Some other highlights include: a World War II era button with a Hitler reference denouncing professional baseball’s racial policies of the time that sold for $1,840, two pieces of original art by political button artist Brian Campbell that feature President Bush as Humpty Dumpty each sold for $1,581, a Washington D.C. police badge from President Eisenhower’s 1957 inauguration brought $1,442, a beautiful 1939 New York World’s Fair radio sold for $1,391, a Christmas rack pack containing twelve 1952 Topps baseball cards sold for $1,296 and a Lincoln/Hamlin ferrotype brought $1,265. All prices realized include Hake’s 15% buyer’s premium.
"I am extremely pleased with Tuesday’s auction results," said Hake’s founder and COO Ted Hake. He continued, "Campaign items and a great many cause items were hotly contested, setting numerous record prices. It was also great to see the depth of interest in the buttons used as photo examples for my 1986 guide, Collectible Pin-Back Buttons. Thanks to all our bidders for making our 40th anniversary year Hake’s best ever."
