While today a lot packaging is discarded like so much trash, sometimes boxes themselves can become far more collectibles than the contents it once contained. Cereal boxes are a prime example. While the contents from a box of Pep cereal from the mid-1940s isn’t considered all that desirable, the box advertising premium buttons of a wide variety of comic characters is. The same can be said of candy boxes. Oftentimes designed with collectibles cards and games printed on them, these boxes have fans among gum card collectors as well as collectors after their favorite characters.

In Hake’s Americana & Collectibles’ current auction, which ends September 10, 2009, a selection of 10 lots of candy boxes featuring characters such as Dick Tracy (large and standard), Joe Palooka, Davy Crockett, Popeye, Felix the Cat, The Flintstones, Al Capp’s Shmoo, Batman, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes and other boxes featuring g-men and monsters are among the offerings. A majority of these boxes have collectibles cards included in their designs.
