When Detective Comics #27 (Batman’s first appearance) sold for $1,075,500 at Heritage Auction Galleries, it trumped ComicConnect.com’s sale of Action Comics #1 (Superman’s first appearance), which had become the first comic to sell for $1 million just a few days early.

Now it looks as if Action Comics #1 could break through the mark set by Detective Comics #27. And in fact, it already has, according to ComicConnect.

Both of the previous record-breakers were CGC-certified as grading 8.0 on the 10.0 Overstreet scale. ComicConnect has just acquired and is now offering for sale a CGC-certified 8.5 copy.

A company spokesman confirmed that the firm paid more than the $1,075,500 record price for the issue and intends to sell it for a higher price.

“The colors on this book are so extraordinarily vivid I couldn’t peel my eyes away but instead stared and stared,” Vincent Zurzolo, Chief Operating Officer of ComicConnect said of the 8.5 copy. “Simply stated, this is the holy grail of holy grails.”
