The Overstreet Hall of Fame: Don Rosa
Who are the individuals who have made great contributions to the comic book arts? Who are the writers, artists, editors, publishers and others who have plied their craft in insightful ways? The Overstreet Hall of Fame, which spotlights many such creators and leading figures, is featured in The Overstreet Guide To Collecting Comics.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1951, Don Rosa developed a love of Carl Barks’ Uncle Scrooge tales from early childhood. That led Rosa to the creation of his own Barks-inspired comics and characters, notably “The Pertwillaby Papers” for his college newspaper. After graduation, Rosa divided his time between self-created comics, comics fanzine work, and his family’s tile company. In the mid-1980s Rosa began writing and drawing his first Duck stories. “The Son of the Sun” (Uncle Scrooge #219) marked the start of many years’ active work with Scrooge and Donald: first for Gladstone, then for Sanoma and Egmont in Europe.
Perhaps Rosa’s most celebrated achievement is his 12-part epic, “The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck,” which has been repeatedly anthologized around the world and is regarded as one of Disney comics’ great milestones.
With numerous beloved, highly intricate Scrooge McDuck adventures to his name and an international fan following, Don Rosa ranks among today’s most significant Disney comics creators.
