Scarlett Johansson: $10 M for Ghost in the Shell?
Scarlett Johansson is reportedly being courted for the lead role in the live-action Ghost in the Shell project. According to Deadline, DreamWorks has offered $10 million to Johansson to star in the anime adaptation.
DreamWorks had previously been courting Margot Robbie, who made waves with her appearance in The Wolf of Wall Street, but those conversations ended and instead it looks as though Robbie will have a significant part in Warner Bros. Suicide Squad project.
Ghost in the Shell started as a manga by Masamune Shirow in 1989. It focuses on Makoto Kusanagi, a cybernetically-enhanced human who acts as the squad leader of Public Security Section 9. Ghost in the Shell has seen multiple adaptations in Japan, including the popular 1995 film and multiple anime series for television. With Johansson’s recent action film appearances in Lucy and as Black Widow in multiple Marvel films, it comes as no surprise that she would be courted for the part.
Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) is directing the live-action project, with William Wheeler (The Hoax, The Reluctant Fundamentalist) writing the screenplay. There is currently no date set for the film’s release.
