Marvel (via Entertainment Weekly) released the cover for their upcoming Star Wars #1. To celebrate the return of Star Wars to Marvel, the comics company sought artist Alex Ross to create a cover that pays homage to Howard Chaykin’s original 1977 Star Wars #1 cover.

Marvel published ongoing Star Wars comics for almost 10 years from April 1977 to 1986, beginning with an adaptation of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. The rights to the series then went to Dark Horse, where they have remained since 1991. Dark Horse recently finished a 20-issue run of stories set after the battle of Yavin, a 4-issue miniseries of stories about central characters told by other members of the Rebel Alliance, among other titles.

A new ongoing series will be launched at Marvel in January 2015, written by Jason Aaron with art by John Cassaday. The series will focus on the original trio of Luke, Leia, and Han, telling stories that happen between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. Not to skimp on Star Wars content, Marvel will also debut miniseries for Darth Vader and Princess Leia.
