In their Auction #213 Hake’s Americana & Collectibles is offering six lobby cards for the 1935 Universal horror classic Werewolf of London. The film starred Henry Hull, Warner Oland, Valerie Hobson, and Lester Matthews. Directed by Stuart Walker, with a screenplay by John Colton, the film features make-up by the legendary artist Jack Pierce.

The first card shows a large central image of Hull’s frightening werewolf visage with Hull on the right standing beside a Tibetan guide holding a drawn gun and Hull and Hobson to the left. The left side of the card features a ghost-like image of a werewolf floating in the London sky while a bat flies above Big Ben. That image is repeated on the other five cards. Archival tape was added to the bottom right corner and the other corners show small creases.

The second card showcases Hobson walking down the stairs towards the werewolf form of her husband. The prone form of a woman is to the left of the werewolf and an inset image shows Oland as Dr. Yogami on the stairs in the upper left. There is a 1/2” tear on the upper right margin along with some minor corner tip wear and even aging.

The third card in the auction has an image of Hull in his werewolf form in the laboratory. Hobson and Spring Byington look on terrified from the left. The right margin has three small 1/4” edge tears and the right top and bottom corners have had archival tape reinforcements added to the back.

The fourth card features an image of Oland fighting on the stairs with Hull as the werewolf. The card does have some moderate but even aging and scattered handling wear as well as some creasing on the upper right corner and dust soiling on the lower right corner.

The fifth card shows an image of Hull working with his moon lamp while trying to make the Mariphasa plant bloom. Standing by his side is his assistant Hawkins, played by J.M. Kerrigan. The card shows moderate dust soiling along the margins and has archival tape reinforcement added to the back of the lower left corner crease.

The sixth card being offered features an image of Hull and Hobson in formal attire speaking to Oland after he kisses Hobson’s hand. There is scattered handling wear with a 7/8” crease in the lower right corner, a 1-1/2” crease at the upper left corner, and 3/4” creases at the upper right corner. The left center also has a 3-3/4” tear with archival tape repair on the back.

The lobby cards are items #2449-2454, each one measures 11” by 14”. The auction closes November 11-13, 2014 with these items closing on November 13 at 12 PM EST.
