After months of speculation and names such as Joaquin Phoenix, Jon Hamm, and Keanu Reeves tossed around as potentials for the Sorcerer Supreme, Marvel has cast their Doctor Strange. Deadline reports that Benedict Cumberbatch will play Doctor Strange in the upcoming stand-alone film.

Cumberbatch is no stranger to the nerdier side of acting, having portrayed Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock, Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness and Smaug in The Hobbit trilogy. The Doctor Strange film will be directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Jon Spaihts, with Marvel’s Kevin Feige producing. The film is set to release sometime in 2016.
