Bidding Open Dow Collection of Lincolniana
Bidding has officially opened for Heritage’s Donald P. Dow Collection of Lincolniana Americana and Political Grand Format Auction, which contains a number of rare and unique autographs, photographs, military appointments, and other items. The auction itself will take place in Dallas on January 24, 2015 in one of Heritage’s Signature Floor Sessions.
One of the most significant pieces in this auction is a highly important autograph quotation signed by Lincoln. This fragment of a lost letter from Lincoln to Baltimore lawyer Reverdy Johnson enunciates the President’s position on the successful prosecution on the war. It was written on July 26, 1862 and was meant for publication.
There are also a number of tintypes of Lincoln in this lot, including a Sixth Plate Tintype featuring him in the Brady $5 bill pose. It is housed in an embossed copper mat and preserver and is in excellent condition. Tintypes are difficult to find at this size, which measures 2.5” by 3.75”.
Also featured are a number of photographs, including a pair of Warren Albumen photographs. The last photographs of Lincoln during his lifetime were taken by Henry F. Warren on March 6, 1865. The two images here were taken while Lincoln was on the White House balcony and are paired together in this lot.
These and many more items can be found by browsing the online catalog of this auction at Heritage’s website. Internet absentee bidding for the session ends at 10 PM CT the night before the lot comes to auction.
