Supergirl Review: Not Just a Girl
Note, there are spoilers ahead for those who haven’t watched Monday’s episode of Supergirl.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about strong female characters, but the premiere of Supergirl went a little overboard on the girl power moments. If I had to hear “Why, because she’s just a girl?” one more time I might’ve imploded.
Other than that, the premiere definitely held up to the hype. Kara Danvers, cousin of the famed hero Superman, was sent to Earth to help protect him. Well, someone was a little tardy to the party, as Superman didn’t need any help. After placing her with her adoptive family, the Danvers (beautiful cameo here by Dean Cain and Helen Slater) he went off to saving the world.
Meanwhile, Kara grew up living a normal life before coming to work for Kat Grant at the Tribune. Despite her immense powers, the most exciting thing she does is fetch coffee. That is until her sister Alex’s flight experienced engine failure and was about to crash. Kara immediately flies into action to save the day, recklessly exposing herself to the world. But hey, at least we didn’t have to wait ten years to see her fly.
Alex is none too pleased with her sister, though her secret job at the DEO (Department of Extranormal Operations) might have something to do with it. Alex has taken her knowledge of alien biology to build her profession at the DEO which has been monitoring Kara since her arrival on Earth.
Turns out Kara wasn’t the only thing that survived the journey from Krypton. Fort Roz, the universe’s version of Alcatraz, also landed on Earth bringing with it the worst criminals the universe has to offer. When Kara revealed herself to the world, she placed a huge target on her back. It doesn’t help that her mother is the reason most of those criminals were locked up. Thanks mom.
Kara decides to team up with the DEO to stop the criminal Vartox, and with his last breath he warns her “you have no idea what’s coming.” So what is coming? And why does her Aunt Astra seemed to be leading the charge? Well I guess we’ll have to tune in next Monday to find out, but one thing is for sure Kara Danvers is more than “just a girl” she’s Supergirl.
