Hake’s Americana & Collectibles routinely produces good sales with original art from animation and comics. Auction #216 was no different, featuring the sale of original Journey Into Mystery #107 comic book page art by Jack Kirby for $10,120.

Journey Into Mystery served as Thor’s introduction before he got his own title. The pen and ink piece by the legendary comics artist, measures 13-1/2” x 20-3/8” on thin artboard. It comes from page 28 of the Marvel comic, which came out in August 1964.

This page comes from the story “Tales from Asgard: Balder Must Die,” which was a backup story featuring Thor’s half-brother, antagonist, and fan favorite Loki. The page has four large panels showing Loki with the Norn Queen Karnilla, him searching for mistletoe, and him making a dart fashioned out of mistletoe while he waits for a slave troll to make a blowgun. Loki appears in every panel.

The Kirby art includes inks by Vince Colletta and handwritten title with issue and page number in grease pencil at the top. The top of the page also has an explanation of what is happening in each panel and the left and right margins have penciled text near the bottom panels.

The beautiful piece of original art is a great early Loki collectible.
