Once the results were compiled in Hake’s Americana & Collectibles Auction #216, quite a few surprises were revealed. While some collectibles sold beyond their pre-auction estimates, one sold for 15 times the expected price.

Hake’s sold an Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter Regal China prototype teapot for $15,306. The prototype teapot was estimated at $1,000 to $2,000 and was blown out of the water. It is an impressive amount for a non-Mickey Mouse Disney figure.

“All vintage Disney prototype material is highly coveted and rarely comes up for sale,” Hake’s President Alex Winter said. “This is especially true for ceramic pieces. This teapot is a truly stunning and unique item from one of Disney’s most beloved films. While it far exceeded our estimate, it is always hard to predict where a one of a kind item might end up. In this case it was well warranted as one of the top items in the auction.”

The Mad Hatter Regal china prototype teapot is 6” x 8” x 7-3/4”, circa 1951. The prototype features a classical teapot shape as opposed to the finished figural design. Hake’s believes that the prototype design may have been rejected in favor of the figural designs on the finished products. The underside of the teapot has “Walt Disney” copyright etched in the unglazed china. The Mad Hatter’s name does not appear on the piece, however.

The teapot features a relief image of the Mad Hatter on the teapot exterior as opposed to having the teapot shaped like the Mad Hatter’s body. The prototype features the relief design on one side of the smooth handle as opposed to the handle being the figural stack of teacups. The spout is plain with the Mad Hatter’s hand on one side of the teapot instead of forming the spout as if tea is actually flowing from the teapot in his hand.

Hake’s has many collectibles currently available for sale on their website. They are also seeking consignments for upcoming auctions. To discuss consigning with Hake’s Americana & Collectibles, contact Consignment Manager Kelly McClain at mkelly@hakes.com or call (866) 404-9800, ext. 1636.
