Superman has had an incredible number of adventures over the course of his many decades of action, but one notable series took the time to take a closer look at some of his earliest stories. Superman Confidential, which ran from January 2007 to June 2008, told the tales of Superman’s fledgling career as a superhero, such as his first encounter with Darkseid.

The most notable arc in Superman Confidential was its first one, which documented Superman’s first encounter with Kryptonite via a flashback sequence. Written by Darwyn Cooke with art by Tim Sale, the story delved into how the Man of Steel had to confront his own mortality.

Perry White assigns Lois Lane, Clark Kent, and Jimmy Olsen to investigate a casino that has sprung up in Metropolis, which is being run by notorious gangster Tony Gallo. Eventually, Superman confronts Gallo, and is knocked unconscious by a blast of radiation from a Kryptonite-loaded gun.
