The Rocketeer Flies On
The Rocketeer has become one of the more iconic heroes in comic books thanks to his trademark helmet and jetpack that give him such a distinct look. And thanks to the 1991 Disney live-action adaptation, there’s plenty of fans who know the character but have never actually read the books he’s appeared in.
The Rocketeer is the alter-ego of Cliff Secord, a stunt pilot who comes upon a jetpack that enables him to take flight. Fans of the comic might be more familiar with the character’s self-titled trade paperbacks and other stories, but he actually first appeared in a backup feature to the Starslayer series from Pacific comics. After a quick cameo in Starslayer #1, his first adventure kicked off in Starslayer #2 in April 1982.
Cliff fights crime as the Rocketeer after discovering a package that was hidden away by gangsters that contained a prototype jetpack. He first uses the pack to save a friend of his, and is quickly dubbed by the media as “The Rocketeer.” Cliff has to face off against the gang that had stolen the jetpack to begin with, as they intend to turn over the technology to Nazi spies.
The character kind of bounced around throughout the ’80s, going from Pacific Comics to Eclipse Comics to Comico Comics and then landing at Dark Horse. In ’91, Russ Heath illustrated the adaptation of the Disney film. The entire series wouldn’t be collected until 2009, when IDW put the entire series (thus far) into a complete edition. IDW has since published a number of newer Rocketeer stories in the years since, including a crossover with The Spirit.
Hake’s Americana & Collectibles has the first full appearance of the Rocketeer, Starslayer #2 CGC 9.8, in their current auction. The issue features a cover by Mike Grell with Dave Stevens’ artwork of the character on the back. As the auction will close on July 13, 2017, interested parties are encouraged to get bids in soon.
