Altus Press has announced the revival of the violent pulp magazine hero, the Spider. The new series of over the top novels, beginning with the novel Wild Adventures of the Spider, will be written by author Will Murray, who has over 70 books to his credit.

The Spider was launched in 1933, featuring millionaire criminologist Richard Wentworth who became the Spider to stop crime. He was a violent, manic depressive masked avenger, starring in an edgy story that was well ahead of its time.

The character served as inspiration to Spider-Man co-creator, Stan Lee. “When I was about 10 years old, I used to read a pulp magazine called The Spider and subtitled ‘Master of Men,’” Lee said. “Perhaps it was the Master of Men that got me, but to my impressionable, preteen way of thinking, the Spider was the most dramatic character I had ever encountered. He ranked right up there with Doc Savage and The Shadow.”

In Murray’s first novel, The Doom Legion, the Spider faces a horde of cosmic zombies that were created by radiation from a fallen meteorite. The transformed New Yorkers, who are now rampaging monsters, have gotten the attention of several heroes and villains. This story sees the Master of Men team up with pulp counterparts like James Christopher, alias Operator 5, and World War I flying ace, G-8, star of the legendary G-8 and his Battle Aces magazine. Together they’ll fight G-8’s nemesis Steel Mask, a supervillain who may have inspired Dr. Doom.

The Doom Legion sets the stage for a universe of pulp heroes to interact in exciting combinations,” Murray said. “The sequel, Fury in Steel, features the return of an armored Spider villain called – wait for it – The Iron Man. Stan Lee must have read that issue, too. Beyond that, I plan to play up Richard Wentworth’s obsessive, often paranoid behavior. The Spider was the first borderline personality superhero ever created. That’s what makes him so compelling.”

Murray is the author of The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage, as well as novels featuring Nick Fury, The Destroyer, and the recent King Kong versus Tarzan.
