THQ Nordic Acquires Kingdoms of Amalur Rights
THQ Nordic announced via Twitter that they have acquired the rights to various assets from the now-defunct 38 Studios, most importantly including the 2012 role-playing game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
Kingdoms of Amalur was released for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in early 2012, and was the only game ever developed and published by 38 Studios; the studio was notably run by former MLB pitcher Curt Schilling, but after many financial mistakes and controversy, shut down not long after Kingdoms was published. The game had been planned to be the first in a series, with the Amalur universe intended to become the setting of a massively multiplayer online RPG in addition to containing a single-player sequel.
The game featured involvement from notable industry names, such as comic book artist and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane contributing artwork, and Forgotten Realms novelist R.A. Salvatore working on the story. The acquisition of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning by THQ Nordic may point to the game seeing a port to a more contemporary gaming system, or a furthering of the story (as the company did with the Darksiders series).
