In Memoriam: Burt Reynolds
Actor Burt Reynolds passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2018, after going into cardiac arrest, according to his agent Todd Eisner. He was 82 years old.
Reynolds’ career was marked by several notable projects, like Deliverance, Smokey and the Bandit, The Cannonball Run, Evening Shade, and Boogie Nights.
Born February 11, 1936, Reynolds went to Florida State University on a football scholarship and was drafted by the Baltimore Colts. His sports career was derailed by an injury, leading to his pursuit of acting, which included winning a scholarship to the Hyde Park Playhouse.
His break into acting came in 1957, in a New York City Center revival of Mister Roberts, which led to a TV contract. He had made repeated appearances on shows like Riverboat, Gunsmoke, Hawk, and Dan August during this period. Reynolds gained popularity through his charm and rugged good looks that appealed to both women and men. By the early ’70s he made regular appearances on talk shows, with frequent stops by Johnny Carton’s Tonight Show.
Though Reynolds had done film work, his first major movie role came in the 1972 thriller Deliverance, in which a group of friends seek adventure on a river rafting trip and end up fighting to survive. The movie established him as a serious actor and budding film star.
He also became even more of a sex symbol by posing as the first nude male centerfold in Cosmopolitan magazine.
Reynolds spent the ’70s and ’80s as an in-demand actor, starring in comedies like The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit (followed by two sequels), Semi-Tough, The Cannonball Run (and its sequel), and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. He also appeared in popular romantic comedies like Starting Over with Jill Klayburgh and Candice Bergen and Best Friends with Goldie Hawn and Jessica Tandy.
Returning to the small screen, Reynolds starred in the popular sitcom Evening Shade as a former pro football player who returned to his small town home to be the local high school football coach. The show ran for four seasons in the early ’90s, earning Reynolds an Emmy in ’91 and a Golden Globe in ’92. He also directed episodes of the show, along with behind the scenes work for other projects.
His resurgence in film began in ’96 when he played a drunken congressman in Striptease with Demi Moore. Reynolds then took on the role as a pornography film director in Boogie Nights, which earned him a best supporting actor Golden Globe award and an Oscar nomination. He also appeared in the Rowan Atkinson comedy Bean, the hockey sports film Mystery, Alaska, and the thriller Tempted.
In later years, Reynolds was in the remake of The Longest Yard, the reboot of The Dukes of Hazzard, and did a guest spot on The King of Queens, and voice work on Robot Chicken and Archer. His final roles included The Last Movie Star, Defining Moments, and he was filming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
