Emerald City Comic Con Sees Cancellations Due to Coronavirus Concerns
Emerald City Comic Con (ECCC) is seeing several cancellations due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus outbreak. This news comes after more cases have been reported in Washington, with 27 confirmed cases in Seattle and 9 known deaths in the state from Covid-19 virus.
ECCC is scheduled to be held at the Washington State Convention Center on March 12-15, 2020, but several guests and vendors have announced that they will not attend the show. DC has cancelled their appearance at ECCC, as well as all other March conventions. CGC, Dark Horse Comics, and Penguin Random House have cancelled their appearances at ECCC, citing concern for the health of employees. Some of the individual comic creators who have announced that they will not attend include Jen Bartel, Jim Lee, Steve Leiber, Benjamin Percy, and Jim Zub.
Following the news of more cancellations, ECCC issued a statement on March 4, announcing that they will give refunds to ticketholders “who are unable or uncomfortable attending Emerald City Comic Con in light of current events.”
The statement also expressed that ECCC, as part of Reedpop, is “committed to following the enhanced cleaning guidelines, precautions, and procedures” they followed at their recent PAX East event in Boston and C2E2 in Chicago.
“We are fully prepared to adjust our plans as the situation in and around Seattle develops. We are following – and will remain in compliance with – all city, state and federal guidelines. If the direction from federal, state or local official public health authorities does change between now and the show, we will adhere to that guidance, act upon it immediately, and update you,” the statement read.
More information on ECCC can be found on the show’s website.
