CGC 9.4 Amazing Fantasy #15 Tops $795K at Heritage
Impressive results are rolling in for Heritage’s Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction, which began closing on Thursday, March 5 and continue ending through Sunday, March 8, 2020. Leading the pack is everyone’s Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man who stuck the landing with a sale deep into the six figures.
Amazing Fantasy #15 CGC 9.4, one of the highest graded copies of the book, sold for $795,000. Known for introducing Spider-Man, this book was written by Stan Lee, with art by Steve Ditko, and cover by Jack Kirby, making it one of the most desirable books of the Silver Age.
The webslinger grabbed a major art sale when John Romita Sr.’s Amazing Spider-Man #51 original cover cleared $312,000. The cover shows Kingpin looming over Spider-Man and is one of the finest covers Heritage has had from this title.
Superman #1 CGC 3.5, which is the second most desirable Superman comic following Action Comics #1, soared to $288,000. This copy had been handed down through the consignor’s family and was offered for public sale for the first time.
Captain America Comics #1 CGC 7.0, housing the origin and first appearance of Captain America, hammered for $186,000. This issue, which also contains the introductions of Bucky and Red Skull, features the memorable cover by Jack Kirby who also contributed interior art with Joe Simon.
Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo in Slumberland Sunday comic strip original art dated September 6, 1908 realized $168,000. This page came from the Garry Trudeau collection and had been exhibited at institutions around the world. It is the fifth oldest Little Nemo Sunday that Heritage has sold.
Batman #1 CGC 4.0, the second most desirable Batman book after Detective Comics #27, grabbed $117,000. Not only does this major key kickoff Batman’s titular run, it introduces two of the most important characters in the Dark Knight’s mythos – Joker and Catwoman (then called the Cat).
