Did You Know?: The original Venom was Eddie Brock, a rival journalist to Peter Parker. Eddie, having been professionally humiliated, drew the symbiote to himself via his powerful feelings of hatred and despair. After bonding with the symbiote, Eddie and the alien creature took on the name “Venom” because – as Eddie could only find work at a shady tabloid – that’s what he “was paid to spew these days!”
