In Memoriam: Juan Vlasco

Comic book inker Juan Vlasco died on Friday, April 24, 2020 in his hometown of Mexico City due to complications from an appendicitis operation, according to artist Jorge Break. He was 51 years old.

Vlasco started working for Marvel as an inker in the ’90s, on titles like Uncanny X-Men. He worked with penciler José Ladrönn on Cable, Marvel: Shadow and Light, and the DC/Marvel crossover Spider-Boy Team-Up.

For DC, he also inked Superman: President Lex, Batman: Orphans, and Impulse, as well as on their Wildstorm imprint titles Cybernary 2.0 and Robotech Sourcebook.

More recently Vlasco worked with penciler Paco Medina on Deadpool, Nova, U.S. Avengers, and Avengers: No Road Home. He also inked Magnificent Ms. Marvel over pencils by Joey Vasquez and Minkyu Jung.

Vlasco worked on Planet of the Apes books at Dark Horse and he worked on Anarchy Studios’ Vampi.

“Everyone in the Marvel family is shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of inker Juan Vlasco,” Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski tweeted. “Over his long career with us, his brush breathed life into so many pencilers’ lines and touched almost every character in our universe. Juan, you will be sincerely missed!”
