Heritage Sports Collectibles Auction Scores $12.5M
Heritage’s three-day Spring Sports Collectibles Auction on May 7-9, 2020, brought more than $12.5 million, ending at 20% higher than their preauction estimate. Highlights included items from some of the biggest figures in sports like Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, and Shoeless Joe Jackson.
Topping the auction was Babe Ruth’s 52nd home run bat from the 1921 season, that nearly doubled its $500,000 estimate to win $930,000.
One of the biggest sales of the first night was for one of the greatest in the NBA when Michael Jordan’s 1986 Fleer rookie card graded PSA GEM Mint 10 sold for $96,000. That nearly doubles the previous highwater mark for a PSA-graded Jordan rookie set only a week ago.
Another Chicago sports star also shined in Thursday’s sale when a rare Shoeless Joe Jackson 1910 T210 Old Mill card reached $492,000. It was the top sale during the card auction.
“The card market is as hot as I’ve ever seen it,” Chris Ivy, Heritage’s Director of Sports Auctions, said.
Jordan’s rookie card wasn’t the only item of his that outperformed expectations. The lesser known 1985-1986 Star Co. Jordan card, part of a limited run Chicago Bulls team set and graded BGS NM-MT+ 8.5, was estimated to sell for $8,000. Instead it sold for $15,199. A lot of 36 unopened packs of ’86 Fleer cards that contained Jordan stickers hammered for $58,800. A pair of Jordan-worn cleats from his ’94 baseball season with the Birmingham Barons swung to $27,600.
“It is safe to say that the market for Michael Jordan has never been better than it is now, and I don’t think it’s going back,” Ivy said.
The Joe Jackson card comes from his time with the New Orleans Pelicans graded SGC VG+ 3.5. It was part of a collection which featured almost 600 T206 White Border tobacco cards and almost 90 T210 Old Mill cards.
“Bidding continued well into the night for this special Shoeless Joe Jackson rookie card,” Ivy said. “After 110 years in the same North Carolina family, we were glad to help find it a proud new owner.”
Additional highlights included a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 PSA NM-MT 8 for $360,000; a Ted Williams Play Ball card from his 1941 season for $120,000; a 2011 Bowman Chrome Draft Prospect Autograph Superfractor Francisco Lindor 1/1 #BCAP-FL, PSA Mint 9 for $102,000; and a 2010 Bowman Chrome Draft Prospect Autograph Superfractor Christian Yelich, 1/1 #BDPP78, PSA Mint 9 for $111,000.
