Jerry Stiller, the actor known for The King of Queens and Seinfeld and Ben Stiller’s father, died at 92.

A stage and screen actor, Stiller was born in Brooklyn on June 8, 1927. He served in World War II and then earned a drama degree at Syracuse University then moved on to New York City where his career began.

He and his wife Ann Meara met in the early 1950s and became the comedy duo Stiller & Meara, gaining fame in the ’60s. Together they made several appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and in ’86 they starred in The Stiller and Meara Show TV movie.

He and Ben Stiller performed together in Shoeshine, which was nominated for an Academy Award short subject film in 1988.

Stiller was a popular guest star on Seinfeld as Frank Costanza, George’s father, earning an Emmy nod in ’97. His character was involved in some of the show’s most memorable gags, including co-creating the “bro” bra for men, he was a Korean War cook who gave his unit food poisoning, and covering his temper by yelling “Serenity now.”

He landed another exaggerated over the top dad role on King of Queens as Arthur Spooner, Carrie’s father. Stiller starred in the show throughout its nine-year run.

Stiller starred in two film adaptations of Hairspray – as Wilbur Turnblad in the ’88 movie and Mr. Pinky in the 2007 adaptation.

He appeared in episodes of The Love Boat, Reading Rainbow, Murder, She Wrote, L.A. Law, Law & Order, and Sex and the City. He played his son’s manager in Zoolander and the sequel in 2016.

In 2001 he wrote his book Married to Laughter: A Love Story Featuring Anne Meara.
