On January 14-17, 2021, Heritage will host their first Comics & Comic Art Auction of the year, which is poised to be a record setter. Among the many key pieces of Golden to Modern Age art, Heritage is offering Green Lantern art by Neal Adams, Amazing Spider-Man art by Todd McFarlane, and much more.

“Over the past decade or so, comic book collecting as a hobby – and a wise asset diversification strategy – has been growing faster throughout the world than almost any other major collectibles field,” Heritage Co-Chairman Jim Halperin said. “I believe that growth will continue, in large part due to mass appeal of fascinating and often thought-provoking stories and characters appearing in so many of the world’s most popular movies, streaming series and video games. And many, if not most, serious comic book collectors eventually expand into original art, because each piece is unique and no one else can own it. The appeal is undeniable – and, as many collectors will attest, irresistible.”

Among the top original art highlights in the auction is the Green Lantern #77 cover by Neal Adams. This was done for the second issue of the team-up between Hal Jordan and Green Arrow in which Adams and writer Denny O’Neil tackled real life issues and controversies.

Another important Adams cover in the auction is the Justice League of America #89 homage to sci-fi author Harlan Ellison.

Sticking with that title, there are three pages from the Justice League of America #29 story “Crisis on Earth-Three.” One is a splash that explains the heroes of the different Earths, page 4 about the history of Earth-3, and page 21 showing powerful DC villains. Adding provenance to these lots, the pages were originally gifted to Don and Maggie Thompson during a visit to the DC offices.

Taking things in a scarier direction, Heritage is offering Swamp Thing #5 page 14 original art by the character’s co-creators Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson.

Moving over to Marvel, they are offering art by Jack Kirby, John Buscema, and Steve Ditko, as well as modern era artists. Topping that list is the X-Men #272 two-page splash by Jim Lee and inker Scott Williams from writer Chris Claremont’s run. It features an all-star lineup of heroes like Wolverine, Cyclops, the Beast, Cable, Cannonball, Gambit, Psylocke, Banshee, Sunspot, Archangel, and Marvel Girl.

Another Lee and Williams pairing is found on the Fantastic Four #3 cover for the “Heroes Reborn” reboot. It features the Thing, Invisible Woman, Captain America, Thor, and Sub-Mariner.

The Amazing Spider-Man #322 page 2 original art by Todd McFarlane will likely be an auction highlight. This comes from halfway through McFarlane’s run with an action sequence featuring Spidey and Silver Sable.
