Aggressive plans are being made for movies based on DC’s line of comic characters. During an interview with The New York Times, DC Films President Walter Hamada stated that starting in 2022 the company will release up to four theatrical films and two HBO Max-exclusive movies per year.

Hamada said that the theatrical movies would be the more expensive tentpole productions and HBO Max-only releases will be the smaller budget films. This could open the door for the Batgirl movie that’s been discussed for years or the Static Shock movie Michael B. Jordan plans to produce for HBO Max if DC Films doesn’t consider it to be a big budget, wide audience option.

DC Films currently has The Batman, The Flash, and Aquaman 2 on the schedule for 2022, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods set for 2023. Black Adam is also in the works, but it does not currently have a release date.

Hamada also pointed out that HBO Max is a big part of DC’s future and that DC is keeping the streaming service in mind for potential spinoffs. For example, HBO Max spinoffs are already in the works for The Batman and The Suicide Squad. HBO Max will also run original DC series, including Green Lantern and Justice League Dark.
