Heritage’s Platinum Night Sports Auction Sees $25.5M
Heritage’s Winter Platinum Night Sports Auction was a swing for the fences, slam dunk with new records and huge final prices for many rare pieces. Held on February 26-27, 2022, the two-day sale saw a grand total of $25.5 million.
One of the auction’s stars was the jersey that Mickey Mantle wore while playing his final game as a New York Yankee on September 28, 1968, which sold for $2,190,000. This set a new record for highest price paid at auction for a Mantle jersey, besting the previous record of $1,320,000 that Heritage set in August 2018.
“We’ve always known this was an incredibly special jersey, as The Mick wore it when he hit his 535th home run and then signed it for a dear friend,” Heritage Sports founder and president Chris Ivy said. “But when it was confirmed to be the very jersey he wore when he took his final swing as a New York Yankee, that’s when it became something historic, as evidenced by the night’s results.”
A Serena Williams 2003 Netpro International (Court Authentic Series A) #2A PSA NM 7, Auto 10 hammered for $163,200. This example, which is #24 of just 100 cards, set a new record for most valuable female sports card sold at auction.
Amelia Earhart’s flight worn cap from her first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in 1928-1929 sold for $825,000. A young man found the cap on the ground after Earhart participated in the National Air Races in Cleveland, Ohio. He gifted it to a young woman named Ellie Brookhart, and it was in her family’s possession since.
One of seven known ticket stubs from Jackie Robinson’s big league debut in 1947 realized $480,000. The only known full ticket from Michael Jordan’s NBA debut in October 1984 achieved $468,000. Those two tickets set a new record for a sports ticket sale.
“Interest in the Jackie Robinson material featured in this auction was immediate and came from all over the globe the very moment the auction was opened,” Ivy said. “Because, of course, he wasn’t just a Hall of Fame ballplayer, but a trailblazer. We are not surprised his ticket is now the record-holder, and were incredibly honored to present these significant items from these landmark moments in a career that defined a sport and a nation.”
Multiple Robinson items took top honors in the auction, including his March 1946 American Baseball Bureau questionnaire that went for $1,680,000. His 1948 Leaf rookie card PSA 8 went for $468,000, a 1946 Heilbroner Baseball Bureau Information card that he filled out and signed brought $120,000, and a copy of his book, Wait Till Next Year, in which he wrote a note to teammate Pee Wee Reese soared to $144,000.
