Hake’s Offers Hulk “Shattered” Mosaic Original Art
Artist Matthew DiMasi has a unique approach for recreating memorable comic book covers that results in deep, textured art pieces unlike anything else on the market. In premier Auction #234, Hake’s is selling one such piece that shows Hulk smashing his way through the art.
The Incredible Hulk Special #1 “shattered” mosaic comic cover recreation original art by DiMasi is in a large 35” x 51-3/4” custom frame. The hand-crafted cover recreation has a classic Hulk image based on the original comic cover by Jim Steranko and Marie Severin, showing Hulk hunched over, straining to hold up the “Hulk” title. The mosaic is signed by Jim Steranko.
DiMasi is known for his “shattered” recreations using ceramic tiles to recreate famous comic covers. The framed art is 2” deep with glossy tile pieces mounted in sanded grout on wooden tile board. The glossy frame has been painted with a basecoat and clearcoat car paint. DiMasi’s initials appear in tile pieces at the top right and Steranko signed the top left in silver paint pen.
These recreations have become so well known that Marvel has actually used DiMasi’s mosaic art as actual variant covers. This one was published as a variant for Immortal Hulk #16 (June 2019).
Hake’s Auction #234 is filled with 1,986 lots of historical and pop culture collectibles covering everything from campaign material to comic books to concert posters. It is open for bidding now through March 15-16, 2022, at hakes.com.
