Heritage International Comic Art & Anime Auction Realizes $3M
Heritage’s International Comic Art and Anime Signature Auction that was held on September 30 through October 2, 2022, closed with a total of $3,028,753. The auction offered original comic art by US and international creators like Frank Miller, Jean Giraud (better known as Moebius), Jack Kirby, Jim Lee, Winsor McCay, Dave Gibbons, Frank Frazetta, Krazy Kat creator George Herrimann, Juan Giménez, and others.
The top seller was Jim Lee and Scott Williams’ original cover art for Batman #617 that sold for $137,500. The dramatic artwork was for chapter 10 of writer Jeph Loeb’s “Hush” story arc, featuring Batman, shovel in hand, crouched in the rain over Jason Todd’s grave.
The original movie poster art for 1995’s Memories by Otomo Katsuhiro (creator of the animated film Akira) hammered for $93,750. The artwork was used for movie tickets, the DVD jacket, and other advertising materials.
Frank Frazetta’s Kubla Khan plate No. 3 original art that was published in a limited portfolio sold for $75,000. Winsor McCay’s original Christmas illustration, which is over 100 years old, also reached $75,000.
