DC Covers Showcased in Hake’s Auction
Hake’s premier Auction #238 is now open for bids, offering collectors 1,930 lots of Americana and pop culture collectibles. The original art section is among the auction’s standout categories, featuring multiple striking comic covers from classic DC books.
The Super-Team Family #15 cover by José Luis García-López features the Flash with Orion, Lightray, and Metron of the New Gods in pen and ink on Sparta illustration board. It comes from the story in which Darkseid caused his son, Orion, to grow to immense size, and the only one who could save him was the Flash.
Michael Netzer’s Armageddon: Inferno #4 cover is from the Armageddon 2001 storyline showing then-current versions of the heroes with their Golden Age counterparts. Inked by Joe Rubinstein, the artboard in pen and ink with white paint accents includes Green Lantern (Guy Gardner/Alan Scott), Flash (Wally West/Jay Garrick), Hawkman (Katar Hol/Carter Hall) as well as Wonder Woman facing down Wildcat and Superman challenging Starman (Ted Knight).
The Freedom Fighters #2 cover by Dick Giordano shows the Freedom Fighters Uncle Sam, the Ray, and Human Bomb rushing to the aid of Black Condor, Phantom Lady, and Doll Man who were turned into statues by Silver Ghost. The statue effect on the artboard with pen and ink art was established by applying a large area of screen accent over the art.
Joe Kubert’s Gigantic Strange Adventures #227 cover was inked by Gaspar Saladino and appears on Sparta illustration board with pen and ink art. It depicts a laboratory scene in a salt water tank sending a message to the scientist’s monitor that he is choking and needs more salt, causing the scientists to dump more salt into the water before he suffocates.
The Titans/Legion of Super-Heroes: Universe Ablaze #4 cover by Dan Jurgens with inks by Phil Jimenez is from a crossover story. The artboard with pen and ink art is packed with heroes from both teams, including Titans Nightwing, Troia, Tempest, Argent, Starfire, and Cyborg; and Legion team members Cosmic Boy, Gates, Leviathan, Live Wire, Mon-El, Saturn Girl, and Triad.
